1.1 The workshop
In a workshop where wood is processed, there are workbenches and machines. Usually these 2 parts are separated by a wall. This way you won’t be bothered by the noise of the machines when you work behind the workbench. The part where the machines are located is also called the machine. In part 2 of the step-by-step woodworking plan you will learn more about the machine.

Appointment 2 – Tools
Chisels and saws are sharp tools. Only use them in the way you have been taught! Always think about that carefully. If you are unsure how to do something, it is better to ask again first.
Appointment 3 – Machines
Machines are dangerous. The saws, drills and chisels mounted on a machine usually spin very quickly. Only work on a machine after asking the teacher to do so. You also have to be sure that you know how to work on that machine. Otherwise, ask first.
Appointment 4 – Sound
Machines make a lot of noise. Protect your ears from noise. Therefore always wear earplugs or earmuffs in the workshop.

Appointment 5 – Dust
When you start sawing or sanding wood, dust is created. Too much wood dust is not good for your health. When you work with machines, you should therefore always switch on the extraction system. It sucks the dust away.
If you work on the workbench, you should regularly remove the wood dust from the workbench and the floor. You have to clean up the dust with a dustpan and dustpan. Make sure you do this quietly so the dust doesn’t start swirling. It is even better to use a vacuum cleaner.
Appointment 6 – Clean up
Always tidy up your things. Otherwise someone may trip over wood on the floor. You don’t want to be responsible for that, do you? You should also tidy up the tools you use.
Appointment 7 – Be calm
Don’t scare anyone when he’s at work. Someone must be able to concentrate to prevent accidents. Therefore always approach others calmly and from the front.
Appointment 8 – Concentration
Never get too relaxed. Just when you think you know how a machine works, you pay less attention. And then accidents can happen faster. So always pay attention when working with machines and tools. Always work concentrated.
TIP! Read these 8 appointments regularly. Stick to those rules and agreements. This way no dangerous situations arise and no accidents occur.
How do you use a workbench?
The wood must be firmly fixed. There are two vices on the workbench for this. When you clamp wood in the vise, you must turn the adjusting nut to the right position. This way the vise stays neatly straight while clamping the wood.

1.5 The saw board The saw board is a handy tool when you work at the workbench. You can easily make a saw board yourself. There are saw boards for right-handed and left-handed people.

How do you use a saw board?
When working on the workbench, you need to clamp the wood properly. You often clamp the wood on the workbench with a glue clamp. But if you have to saw through wood, that’s not very convenient. Easier than using a saw board. Hold the wood against the support with one hand, so that it is firmly fixed. With your other hand, hold the saw and saw through the bar. You can use the saw board on both sides. So it will wear the board equally on the top and bottom.

1.6 Your attitude
To work As with sports, you can also get injured at work. This is due to a wrong attitude.
Always stand behind a workbench or machine with your legs slightly apart. This way you stand firmly and keep your balance. Make sure you are standing behind a workbench that is adapted to your height.
You also need to lift properly. Otherwise you can get back problems. This boy shows in 2 steps how to lift properly.

2. Get all the way down on your knees first. Pick up the chest. Keep your back straight. Straighten your knees.
Always lift large planks and plates with 2 people at the same time. The boy in the photo on the right is not smart, because he lifts too much wood by himself. As a result, he has a chance to get injured.
So, this is not how it should be!
